Our life is made up of our relationship
to God and our contacts with people and things. Every day brings its succession
of silences, conversations, activities, contacts of one kind and another.
What we must aim at is the consecration of the commonplace, the realization
of the splendour of the ordinary day. Our environment may be a difficult
one, and we may have difficult temperaments with which to live, but it
is just in those things that we may find the great adventure. If we bring
them to our Lord, it will be revealed to us that in these contacts is given
to us by the divine appointment the way of our development towards sanctity.
God does not like 'reach-me-downs' :ready-made articles are not to His
taste. It is His way to create a being with possibilities, giving to His
creature the power of development and by His gifts of grace sharing with
HIs creature in that development.
The scene may appear common and the experience drab, but just as the stark
hill of Calvary shines for ever with the dawn above it, because of the
Love that was revealed there, so our own ordinary life may have an extraordinary
beauty, if by the loving oblation of our will it is really consecrated
to the Lord of Calvary.
